Description

CHTOT is an NSF recode variable describing how many children the respondent lived with as part of his/her family.

Comparability

In samples before 2003, the number of children is recoded into a one to three children category and a more than three children category. In samples 2003 and onward, CHTOT is divided into a category for one child living with the respondent, and a category for more than one child.
