Codes and Frequencies
Description
HDAY5 reports the year, recoded to intervals, in which the respondent received his/her highest degree. The variable HD03Y5 provides similar information for different samples.
Comparability
HDAY5 had originally been available only in 2001 public use samples. A similar variable, HD03Y5, was available from 1993 to 2013, but there were comparability issues in the year intervals over time. Source variables for samples of HD03Y5 prior to 2003 were instead assigned to HDAY5 so that all responses within the same variable corresponded to the same year category.
Prior to 2003, the year ranges differed from the 2003-onward intervals by 1 year. For example, in the SESTAT 2003 NSCG sample, a code of 1970 corresponds to 1971 to 1975, whereas in the SESTAT 1993 NSCG sample, 1970 corresponds to 1970 to 1974.
In the SDR 2001 sample, the value is given in 5-year intervals, whereas in the NSRCG sample, the value is split into 2000 for after 2000, and 1995 for prior to the year 2000.
